Science, Philosophy and Society
There was a time when philosophers of science were being accused of 'subversive’ and 'hostile' activities toward science. What was behind these accusations and are they still current? And, what is philosophy of science anyway? In this workshop we will discuss some of the basic questions and claims of the philosophy of science, like whether the history of science is indeed a linear ‘convergence to truth’ achieved by the ever increasing acceptance of 'right' and rejection of 'wrong' theories, what is the role of experience and experiments in this process, why it is always possible to save the rejected hypotheses, is there really something like 'neutral scientific facts', how to understand the success of science, and why it is not possible to understand science and its development without a wider social context.
