Sewage sludge disposal routes: Case study – North Adriatic region in Croatia

Sewage sludge disposal is a costly and environmentally and socially highly sensitive process. The construction of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Croatia has intensified due to its commitments towards the EU. Sewage sludge disposal has become a significant burden to almost all utility companies, as well as to certain aspects of the operation of local governments. Based on a review and description of many technical and technological solutions for treatment and disposal of sewage sludge used worldwide, it will be shown that this problem is certainly not only a technical issue, but is a result of different approaches that depend on the natural and social givens of each state (region). Sludge disposal is not only important in terms of complying with the regulations, but also in terms of selecting the optimal treatment concepts, including the sludge treatment itself. This paper presents a critical overview of current practices on sewage sludge disposal routes with special emphasis on EU countries. In the case study for the North Adriatic region in Croatia, technical and financial aspects of different sewage sludge disposal routes are analysed demonstrating the need for a new approach to solving a given problem. In this particular case co-incineration of sewage sludge in cement plants represents the economically most favourable solution and also the solution with the lowest economical risks. The analyses can serve as a good basis for defining guidelines for effective disposal of sewage sludge, both in Croatia and beyond.
