Ladies need a break from work: Partners' recovery from work and relationship satisfaction
Recovery from work can be defined as a process in which the individual’s systems activated during stressful experiences are returning to their basic levels of functioning. Given that the recovery from work takes place „at home“, exploring it outside the context of family life would give an incomplete picture. However, research on relationship satisfaction and partners’ recovery from work are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the recovery from work strategies between partners and to examine the extent to which they can contribute to the explanation of relationship satisfaction. 178 Croatian heterosexual dual-working couples participated in the study. Recovery from work was measured by The Recovery Experience Questionnaire and relationship satisfaction with Quality of Marriage Index. Correlations between partners’ recovery measures were in range from low to medium. Women showed greater recovery from work for the whole measure, as well as on the subscale of psychological detachment from work. We proposed a model with one’s and partner’s recovery strategies as predictors, and relationship satisfaction as a criterion variable. With this model, we explained a substantial proportion of variance of relationship satisfaction – both the own and partner’s recovery from work were related to higher relationship satisfaction. Findings suggest the existence of gender differences in relation to the recovery from work and relationship satisfaction – while in women subsample both blocks of variables made significant contribution to the explanation of their relationship satisfaction, in men subsample the only significant contribution was their partner’s relaxation from work. This research points to the importance of investigating the phenomenon of recovery from work in the context of romantic relationships. Practically speaking, it gives clear guidance towards relationship satisfaction improvement through implementing recovery from work strategies in free time.
