Satellite derived batymetry - methods and possibilitiesMetropolitan Area

Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB) is a relatively new method which uses satellite or other remote multispectral imagery for depth determination. Recent advances in satellite technology (spectral, radiometric, temporal and spatial resolution improved) have increased potential of this method as a source of hydrographic data. This method was developed in the late 1970s, but the last few years become widely available and used. SDB is a survey method founded on analytical modelling of light penetration through the water column in visible and infrared bands. SDB data has potential to become most important low cost source of marine spatial data including hydrographic data. Procedures for different hydrographic applications are being developed. Satellite multispectral imagery at resolution higher than 30m is suitable for SDB, as this method results in an average depth per pixel. According S-100 and S-101 multibeam echo-sounder (MBES) data typically met quality of data object - M_QUAL and the Category of Zone of Confidence attribute – CATZOC A1 (positional data accuracy of ±5 m + 5% of depth and vertical or depth accuracy of ±0.50 m + 1% of depth) while almost all SDB data was within the CATZOC C depth accuracy (positional accuracy ±500 m ; depth accuracy of ±2 + 5% of depth). Available SDB data were horizontal and vertical accurate to approximately ±2-3 m. Article will briefly describe available resources (all commercially available satellite missions - Landsat 8, Worldview-2…) used in SDB. The procedures and algorithms (Single-image multiple-image approach) as well as reconnaissance tool will be described. At the end, SDB of test area at the east coast of the Adriatic Sea will be presented.
