Croatian Policy towards the 16+1 Initiative - Missed Opportunities
The paper deals with Croatia's policy towards 16+1 Initiative and bilateral relations between Croatia and China in this context. Their mutual relations are at a high political level, but this is not followed by cooperation in economy, which could be better developed with regard to the interest and potential of both countries. Although the mutual trade is increasing, this is not being followed by mutual investments. After the establishment of diplomatic relation, China is recognized by Croatia as a sincere friend who supports Croatian independence. China perceives Croatia as a country which has a very favorable geo-strategic position in Europe because it is linked with three European regions: Central Europe, the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Increasing cooperation in the field of tourism, culture, education and science also boosts the establishment of a good cooperation at local levels of government. The 16+1 Initiative of which the Croatia state is a member, has not enhanced economic cooperation between the two countries significantly. Although the Chinese financing of major infrastructure projects in the country is talked about, so far this has not happened. After the Croatian accession to the European Union, the economic cooperation is expected to develop faster, thus increasing Croatian participation in the 16+1 Initiative.
