Potential of biomethane production in City of Zagreb based on the citizen participation as a part of integrated biowaste management
The implementation of sustainable waste management in the City of Zagreb should be performed through the introduction of source-separation of biowaste, and its utilization as a feedstock for biomethane production. Produced biomethane will be distributed by dedicated network of filling stations within the City area. The main objective of this paper is presentation of environmental and economic benefits of proposed approach and citizen’s involvement in separate collection of biowaste from households. In this sense, a survey has been conducted among residents in order to assess their behaviours regarding the separate collection of waste fractions. Final result of this analysis is the fact that citizens are motivated to participate in biowaste separation, and only minor percentage are unwilling to participate due to the lack of space or potential odours. The main motivation is the reduction of waste fee, creation of new jobs, stimulation of local economy and biofuel production.
