Nakovana Cave - Part 1: Recent Research.
Nakovana Cave is that rarity in archaeological fieldwork, a sealed cavern that is at the same time an undisturbed archaeological site, discovered by archaeologists, not casual explorers. Excavations in Nakovana in 1999 and 2000 show that the cave's occupation spaned at least 8000 years. Its most spectacular component is a late Iron Age Illyrian sanctuary. Here, the evidence strongly suggests complex drinking rituals centered around a stalagmitic monument to male potency. In this paper, we introduce the cave and discuss the particular problems associated with its excavation and interpretation.
