Dietary fats and tissue mineral concentration in the early phase of liver regeneration

Introduction: We examined the influence of olive oil- and corn oil-enriched diets on zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations in the early period of liver regeneration. Materials and methods: Male Balb/C mice were fed diets enriched with corn oil or olive oil for three weeks, with a control group on standard diet. Animals were one-third partially hepatectomised under ether anethesia ; 1 and 2 days later they were sacrificed. tissues were removed, washed in saline solution, dried and exposed to the microwave digestion. Minerals were determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. results: During first two days after partial hepatectomy zinc was increased in all three groups compared to controls. Calcium concentration was increased on the firs day in mice fed standard pellet diet compared to control group. Iron concentration was increased during first two days after operation in mice fed olive oil-enriched diet. Magnesium concentration remained unchanged during the early period of liver regeneration in all groups. Conclusions: Intensive, early phase of liver regeneration causes changes in the mineral composition of liver. Zinc concentration in all three groups returned to original value with delay. Olive oil-enriched diet induced increase in the iron concentration during the first two daya of liver regeneration. On the other hand, corn oil-enriched diet prevented changes in the calcium concentration on the first day of the regenerative process.
