Morphological traits of five traditionally grown domesticated apple varieties in Bjelovar Bilogora County
Samples were taken from old traditionally grown unidentified apple trees, and morphological traits of the fruits of several apple varieties were evaluated during three years in the Bjelovar Bilogora County of Croatia. Within this region, the 16 old apple varieties were determined and selection of five, once the most cultivated varieties, was made: Jonatan, Canada, Renette Champagner, Goldrenette, and Haslinger. For these apple varieties, 15 morphological traits of fruits were determined. Results showed that their traits have not been significantly changed despite the age of trees. In principal component analysis (PCA), fruit size (weight, height, and diameter), ground color with a presence of stripes, depth of sepal and taste, firmness and color of flesh were the most reliable traits for discrimination among five chosen apple varieties.
