Analysis of IP and Optical Technologies Convergence
Since an IP data traffic has rapidly been growing during the last few years, transport bandwidth requirements become a critical issue. The basic trend of the next-generation carrier networks is eliminating intermediate layers in the backbone and creating two-layer network architecture consisting of IP over optical layer, i.e. to eliminate a SONET/SDH and ATM layer. In this new architecture, the capacity issues are being addressed by using a DWDM technology. Dynamic provisioning, protection and restoration at the wavelength level are introduced using a wavelength router. IP + optical gives the final solution for the next-generation carrier networks as the combination of the intelligence of the IP routing with the economics and capacity of the optical technology.
