Solid state transformations of copper(II) complexes with 1, 10-phenantroline and L-serine
Copper(II) complexes with heterocyclic bases and amino acids are extensively researched as model systems for proteins[1]. They possess various biological activities[2]. Considering the structures of the title ligands, their complexes may form many different motifs of hydrogen bonds and also stack through π- interactions. In our research we have synthesized and structurally characterized six different solvates of copper(II) complexes with 1, 10- phenantroline (phen) and L- serine (L- ser) in the water/methanol system: [Cu(L-ser) (H2O) (phen)]2SO4·nH2O (n = 4, 6 and 10), [Cu(L-ser) (H2O)(phen)][Cu(L-ser)(CH3OH) (phen)]SO4·3H2O·CH3OH, [Cu(L-ser)(CH3OH) (phen)]2SO4·mCH3OH (m = 2 and 2.5). Compounds showed high sensitivity toward the amount of water and methanol in the surrounding solution and humidity of the atmosphere. We have performed experiments in different surroundings and successfully performed interconversion of the solvates in the solid state.
