Approach for Harmonization of the Carbon Footprint Calculation on Example of the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar

A scientific consensus regarding the impact of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on climate change, with significant contributions of emissions covered by the carbon footprint of organizations, has been achieved on an international level. In order to establish a harmonized approach for calculating the carbon footprint of organizations, the implementation of the LIFE Clim’Foot project started in September 2015. The main goal is the development of five national models with country-specific emission factors, by adapting the French Bilan Carbone® tool to national conditions. The national model, completely in accordance with the appropriate international standards and methods, was tested on the case of Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar in Zagreb, Croatia. The Institute’s carbon footprint for 2016 was estimated at 620.6 tCO2e, while the dominant shares were connected to traveling (56%) and energy sources (24%). The determination of the carbon footprint should be an important step in the recognition of greenhouse gas emission reduction measures and therefore leads to climate change mitigation.
