Stress and pain in emergency and trauma patients

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as, “An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. Painful traumatic injuries account for a large portion of emergency department visits and it is associated with activation of the stress response. Untreated or inadequately treating pain intensifies the effect of trauma on respiration, hemodynamic stability, renal and gastrointestinal function, leading to an increase in complications and deaths. Improved pain management has not only led to increased comfort in trauma patients, but has also been shown to reduce morbidity and improve long-term outcomes. In this article, a brief review of pain in emergency trauma patients and the therapies available for its treatment will be discussed.
