Heat storage optimisation in district heating systems from an energy planning perspective

Energy storage is a key issue in future energy systems with a high share of intermittent renewable energy sources. Heat storage, due to its ability to increase the overall operational efficiency of the entire system, is, in most cases, a cost effective way to increase both the flexibility and the operational efficiency of a district heating system, thus providing technical, economic and environmental benefits. Additionally utilization of new cogeneration units or power to heat technologies, such as heat pumps or electric heaters, in combination with heat storage systems can help to increase the flexibility of the whole power sector. With that the system’s capacity to utilize intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar also increases. The goal of this work is to develop, demonstrate and validate a model capable of optimizing the capacity of thermal energy storage as well as operation of the district heating system on an hourly level. Such approach allowed the model to take into account both hourly and seasonal variations of the overall system operation enabling it to choose between long and short-term heat storage systems. This model has been tested and validated on two different cases, the district heating system of the city of Karlovac and cogeneration district heating plant in Osijek.
