The contribution of the blink reflex on diagnostic value in patients with trigeminal neuralgia and/or temporomandibular joint disorder
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is divided in two separate subgroups: osteoarthritis and variations of anterior disc displacement. Recognizing conditions such as TMJ disorder and trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is important for managing non-dental orofacial pain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of blink reflex in a sample of patients with TMJ disorders and trigeminal neuralgia (TN).Although TMJ diagnosis is the most common gold standard for MRI, there is no gold standard for assessing neuropathic pain caused by idiopathic NT. The absence of confirmation of trigeminal nerve abnormalities by blink reflexes (positive finding in about 40% of patients in both groups) confirms the fact that TN is not related to large myelinate fiber dysfunction.
