Numerical analysis of the influence of roughness on kinematic characteristics of hydraulic jump
Due to its high intensity of turbulence, hydraulic jumps are very attractive to study but also very important phenomenon from the practical point of view. Hydraulic jumps are often used as an effective way of dissipating energy. A numerical model was used to simulate a hydraulic jump inside a rectangular open channel. At the beginning of the thesis, a mathematical model of flow is given. All the equations that describe the k-epsilon turbulence model are presented as well as the "Volume of Fluid" method for solving a two phase flow. To perform a particular parametric analysis of the flow inside the hydraulic jump, the software OpenFOAM was used to numerically reproduce the flow field. Results show the dissipation of mechanical energy caused by the viscous forces, and the approximation of the turbulent structure of the flow. The simulation was run for five different roughness cases in order to glimpse at the interesting proposition that wall roughness can not be neglected when predicting the kinematic properties of a jump.
