Due to the importance of electrical energy storage systems in microgrids, it is crucial to ensure correct operation of battery and ultracapacitor-based devices over a wide range of operating regimes. Therefore, this report presents the development of dedicated State-of-Charge (SoC) and State-of-Health (SoH) monitoring systems based on advanced estimators of dynamic (state) variables and process model parameters, which are designed by utilizing the methodologies of Luenberger state estimator, Kalman filter and Lyapunov stability theory. Based on these methodologies various concepts of combined SoC/SoH estimators are also presented and implemented in this report, thus facilitating highly-flexible monitoring/supervision of the battery and ultracapacitor energy storage systems. The proposed estimators are verified by computer simulations based on faithful battery/ultracapacitor dynamic models under realistic operating conditions, and experimentally on the dedicated battery/ultracapacitor test setup. The battery/ultracapacitor operating regimes included constant-current charging/discharging, emulation of a photovoltaic module power production profile, and DC link power profile characteristic for electric vehicle driving under the highly-dynamic urban driving cycle (the so-called Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule, UDDS).
