Postcolonial Periphery as the Neo-Victorian Metropolis: Dublin as London's Body Double
The essay argues that, in their continuous use of certain elements of Dublin's cityscape, neo- Victorian shows, such as Penny Dreadful and Ripper Street, which appropriate and adapt elements of Victorian literature and culture, together with numerous adaptations of Victorian novels that have also been filmed in Dublin, generate a new, somewhat estranged and unfamiliar (in the sense of Shklovsky's ostranenie or making the known appear as strange) postcolonial image of Victorian London that gradually takes on a life of its own as nineteenth-century London's neo-Victorian Doppelgänger.
