Models of valorisation of cultural heritage in sustainable tourism

The main purpose of this monograph is to present the results of the recent projects and research related to the most effective models of valorisation of the common European heritage in sustainable tourism and community development. The current challenges facing the European Union, such as the economic and migrant crisis, the rise of extremism and serious violations of the values on which our common European identity is based, call for coordinated responses. According to the European Cultural Heritage Strategy, cultural heritage is a key factor for the refocusing of our societies based on a dialogue between cultures, a respect for identities and diversity, and a sense of belonging to a community of values. Cultural heritage is also a powerful factor in social and economic development and an important resource in education, employment and tourism. In the context of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UNWTO has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, intending to promote tourism’s role in inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and poverty reduction, resource efficiency and environmental protection, cultural diversity and heritage, mutual understanding, peace and security. Similar goals, related to the promotion of the key humanistic values of European heritage, as well as its main socio-economic, cultural and environmental impact, are proposed for 2018 - the European Year of Cultural Heritage. It will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the social and economic importance of cultural heritage and to promote European excellence in this sector. The intention of the editors and 22 authors from Croatia, Italy, Austria, Poland and Germany was to promote Europe’s best practices in the valorisation of common European heritage. The European and Croatian experiences presented here in management, funding and the interpretation of a shared heritage indicated great potential for the transfer of knowledge, awareness raising and capacity building in development of integrated European projects. The editors hope that 2017, as the Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, and 2018 as the Year of European Heritage, will offer opportunities for the proposed cooperation and creation of transnational networks.
