Istrian Oral History – In Search of Identity
The paper examines the possibilities of using the oral history method based on a series of conversations with the family of Istrian polyhistor, scientists and writer Mijo Mirković / Mate Balota, carried out in the framework of the doctoral dissertation of the author and related to the period of dramatic cultural changes in Istria between the two wars, recorded in the series of feuilletons "Istria is changing" in 1937 and 1938, especially in the famous "My nephew Aldo Emilio". The research, which was part of the wider project, and which involved interviews with Mirkovic's relatives who emigrated to America after the war, followed the processes of creating and transforming individual and collective identities in Istria under the influence of different ideologies. The scientific contribution of the work consists precisely in the methodology used (field research, oral history methodology, interviews with witnesses of time), which enabled new discoveries and a kind of supplement or correction of known data from 'official' political history and cultural and literary history.
