Biorthogonal Wavelet Filter Banks in Image Compression
Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is a basic step in all wavelet-based compression methods. It makes the choice of wavelet as one of the crucial parameters in coding process and determines the quality of compressed image, both objectively (by means of signal to noise ratio) and subjectively. But, the correspondence between subjective criteria and simple mathematical criteria, as used presently, is rather poor, and much research have been undertaken in finding the best design criteria for optimal filter bank. In this paper we examine properties of various filter banks and its compression capabilities. For evaluation of compression performance we use SPIHT compression algorithm, which is one of the best-known algorithms for wavelet-based image compression due to its low complexity, high efficiency and other nice characteristics as embeddedness of the output stream.
