The effect of NaCl on the uptake and distribution of Na and Cl in plant organs of three strawberry cultivars (Fragaria x ananassa)
The uptake and distribution of sodium and chlorine in three strawberry cultivars: 'Elsanta', 'Marmolada' and 'Miranda' (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) were evaluated in the conditions of a saline growth substrate (0 = control, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 g NaCl L-1 in the irrigation water). The content of sodium and chlorine (% on dry matter basis, DM) was determined in old leaves (OL), young leaves (YL), roots (R), floral shoots (FS) and fruits (F). The increase of salt concentration in the irrigation water had a significant impact on the increase of sodium and chlorine uptake by strawberries. The concentration of sodium and chlorine in plant material was increasing as a result of salt addition, while the respective values depended on the plant organ and cultivar. The largest increase in the concentration of sodium and chlorine was determined in floral shoots and young leaves, and the lowest in fruits. Quantitative share of sodium per plant organ (average Na percentage in the DM) was: floral shoots 0.83 › young leaves 0.72 › roots 0.59 › old leaves 0.57 › fruits 0.20 (averages of all three cultivars). Significant differences among cultivars were registered: 'Miranda' showed lower sodium concentration in the above-ground plant organs and higher concentration in the roots, suggesting the ability to control the movement of sodium into the above-ground parts, thus protecting them from the high concentration of sodium. Quantitative share of chlorine per plant organ (average Cl percentage in the DM) was: old leaves 3.73 › floral shoots 2.96 › young leaves 2.91 › roots 1.16 › fruits 1.09 (averages of all three cultivars). Significant differences between cultivars were also registered, with 'Miranda' having a significantly lower concentration of chlorine in generative organs (floral shoots and fruits).
