The attitude of medical students to medical informatics - Their experience and expectations
Asking medical students about their attitude to medical informatics showed that more than 80% of them felt usefulness of medical informatics and about 60% of them were ready to learn this topic. Internet and computer assisted instruction, as well as database design, were the most interesting issues. Previous experience in informatics (text processing, spreadsheet, Internet, e-mail, etc.) was increasing from 1998 to 1999, excepting experience in programming. Medical informatics was introduced to medical curriculum at the Medical School, University of Zagreb, in 1970. Since then, several medical students interested in medical informatics did research in this field and produced papers which have been published and awarded. Although they became physicians and specialists in various medical fields (but not informaticians), they keep using their medical informatics knowledge and skills in professional activity.
