CIAM 10 in Dubrovnik: the New Beginning of the Long-lasting Search for a New Discourse

CIAM (International Congress of Modern Architecture) – recognized as a symbol of the modern movement – in its three decades long history went through several serious crises that in the given moment even threaten its existence. Dominated by the big Four – Le Corbusier, Sigfried Giedion, Walter Gropius and Cornelius van Eesteren, joined by Jose Luis Sert in 1940’s, it official policy and internal organisation was the source of frustrations and discontent of young ones. From the very beginning there were two opposite sides and different point of views – pragmatic old ones and young idealists. The ruptures were inevitable and periodically occurred from time to time – in 1928, mid-1930s and mid-1940s. Finally it come to an end at CIAM 10 in Dubrovnik in 1956 when for the first time opposition was strong enough to take over leadership. The young ones were very clear in their requirements – they wanted architecture that will correspond with the actual people needs and constantly changing living conditions. They were not willing to compromise and had an idealist idea to use architecture as a tool to build better future. The paper discussed the history of CIAM ruptures. Namely, it argued that the CIAM Congress in Dubrovnik was just one in sequence of events within Congress that led to the new architectural and urban planning discourse beyond the “mature” modernism.
