Developmental aspects of early EFL learning
This chapter explores affective and language development of young foreign language (FL) learners. Using a mixed methods design and a longitudinal approach to researching early language learning, the author looks into how young learners' attitudes to language learning and teaching, their motivation for learning and using the FL, and their FL self-concept develop over four years. These affective processes are considered against young learners' performance on speaking tasks during the four years. The results are interpreted taking into account the broader and the immediate context in which early learning is taking place. The fluctuations in the affective and language development of young learners are analysed and discussed.
