A critical evaluation of the existing performance based design methods

The economic losses resulting from the recent earthquakes have prompted the earthquake engineering community to embrace the concept of performance based earthquake engineering. Damage to structural components of a building can be controlled if displacements could be limited for a specified level of earthquake movement. In that case, the most suitable approach for seismic design practice appears to be deformation controlled design based on explicit and quantifiable performance criteria, considering multiple performance and hazard levels. Currently, several performance based design methods have been suggested. Three techniques – linear elastic analysis and the limit state design of the sections [Sozen at all, 1], the N2 method [Fajfar, 2] and direct displacement-based design [Priestley, 3] are evaluated and compared in this paper. The model structures set consisting of four-, seven- and ten story reinforced concrete frame buildings as well as seven-story wall and dual constructive systems have been designed according to each of the suggested procedures. The methods were compared on model structures in design-state, achieved capacity and their non-linear seismic response to earthquake records of different intensities and characteristics.
