The Robinzon spring

The Robinzon Spring in the Duboka Ljuta valley near Dubrovnik is one of the important karst springs within the Dubrovnik area, which is captured for the water supply of the town of Cavtat and its surroundings. The spring is located on the tectonic contact between the regional thrust (carbonate deposits thrust over the clastic flysch deposits), cut by the dextral tear fault known as the Slivnički Fault. It consists of several dispersed upward springs of similar yield forming a small pond 10 m wide at an altitude of 0.7 m. The pond empties into the sea through a 50 m long channel. The spring discharge is variable, depending on the hydrological conditions. Usually, during dry periods of the year, (mostly summer) a reduced amount of fresh water feeds the spring. As a result, a balance is disturbed between the fresh- and sea-water, causing the sea-water to intrude the aquifer. Geologically, this condition is predisposed by the deeply weathered and eroded contact between permeable and impermeable rocks in the zone of the spring location. Water losses through the hydrotechnical tunnel of the Dubrovnik power plant near the spring (it is 16.000 m long, and connects the accumulation of Trebinje with the Dubrovnik power plant) increased the spring capacity during the drought seasons. Repair works in the hydrotechnical tunnel of Dubrovnik power back in 1998, prevented further losses causing the spring to return to its natural condition. The main goal of this study was to find out more information about the subsurface nature of the spring area by the use of borehole measurements data, and preexisting knowledge about dynamics of fresh- and sea- water in the summer period when great amounts of fresh water are required.
