Dalmatia – a Destination of the European Grand Tour in the 18th and the 19th Century – Chronogeographical Database Presentation
The multi-disciplinary research project of the Institute of Art History, supported by the Croatian Science Foundation, brings together a team of theorists in the fields of comparative literature, architectural and art history, history and architecture. The overall aim of the project is to provide greater insight into the influence of the region on the development of European Neoclassicism and Romanticism, analyse its position between the western and eastern itineraries of the Grand Tour, and provide a more nuanced cultural portrayal of Dalmatia of that period. The chronogeographical database, developed within the project, will be demonstrated for the first time at this conference. The authors will explain how the database can be used by showing some of the finest works of travel literature and art by eighteenth-century British travellers to Dalmatia.
