The Long Term - the Example of Dalmatian Venetian Fortresses
It is an interesting fact that some fortifications retain their function and importance for many centuries. Outstanding examples of this phenomenon in Dalmatia are Knin and Klis, which were governed by the Venetian Republic for a significant part of their history. Obviously certain positions permanently remained of strategic interest, and fortification engineering strived to make them defensively effective by adaptation of the standard forms. In addition to the aforementioned adapted bastion structures, in Venetian fortresses elements inherited from the Middle Ages (faussebraye, tenaille) can be found, now used in modern and original ways.
