The role of nutritional status in the elderly and nutritional-geroltologic standards

In the elderly, nutritional status is of utmost importance of the geriatric domino effect in the treatment of geriatric patients with the predominant 4I + 1P syndrome (immobility, loss of independence, instability, and incontinence) with a fifth component (unfavourable therapeutic outcome with polypharmycy). This especially refers to geriatric in the development of the Nutrional Guidelines for the Elderly in Croatia, conducted continuous training on the implementation of the Guidelines and the monitoring of nutritional status in the elderly via NRS 2002/GeroS/CEZIH web service, all this with support from professional societies and relevant institutions. The objective of the Guidelines is to support the nutritional status assessment in the elderly at risk of malnutrition, to define specific nutritional needs of the elderly, and to aid in choosing the most appropriate nutritional support.Malnutrition is considerably more frequently recorded in old people`s homes, where it ranges from 19 % to 30 %, depending on the category of geriatric patients ; hospitalised elderly individuals are most frequently exposed to malnutrition, i.e. up to 65 % of those in deep age (≥85 years). The Guidelines present specific nutritional needs and recommendations for energy and nutrient intake. Preparation and planning of meals should be consistent with the nutritional-gerontologic standard, in accordance with physiologic requirements of the elderly and with diseases that require specific nutritional adjustments.
