Intensity of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in relation to Alcohol Use in War Veterans – Experiences from Bosnia-Hercegovina

The aim of this study was to establish the correlation between the use of lhohal with the intensity of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder 8PTSP), the cause of stress and the number of traumatic events in veterans of war with clinically diagnosed PTSD and veterans of war without clinically established PTSD. The paper analyzes a group of 200 veterans of war between the ages of 30 and 50, of which 100 were with clinically diagnosed PTSD, and 100 veterans of war had no clinically established PTSD. The medical records of the Psychiatric Clinic in Tuzla, the Harvard Trauma questionnaire version for Bosnia and Herzegovina, were used for the study. Trauma questionnaire: identification of traumatic experience and symptoms of PTSD and stress levels, a semi-structured diagnostic interview for alcohol abuse and dependence (SCID-I) and questionnaire with socio-demographic data for this research. In the total sample of the investigated veteran group, the average age was 42.84. Significantly larger number of veterans of war with clinically diagnosed PTSD consumes alcoholic beverages (p <0.001). There was a significant difference in the number of traumatic events, the level of stress, the intensity of symptoms of evasion, and the disturbance between veterans of war in which the use of alcohol and war veterans is not present (p> 0.001). There was a significant correlation between the use of alcohol and the level of stress and the intensity of the PTSD symptoms (p> 0.001). The results of this study suggest that high levels of stress and higher intensity of PTSD can be predictors of alcohol consumption in veterans of war.
