Multiple Sclerosis as the Cause of Sudden Hearing Loss
Hearing loss as the initial symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS) is rare. The disease is known to affect the meylin of the auditory pathway resulting in sudden hearing loss. We report on two patients in whom sudden unilateral hearing loss was the first symptom, however, they later exhibited other symptoms consistent with MS. Magnetic resonance imaging objectively documented white matter demyelinization. Although an uncommon cause of sudden hearing loss, MS should be suspected in these patients and hearing impairment topodiagnosis is needed.
