Drug use uring Pregnancy : is it always Necessary?

The aim of the study was to determine drug use during pregnancy in Zagreb, Croatia in 2001, to compare it with data from year 1989 and to evaluate the requirement and risks of using the most prescribed drugs. 1000 pregnant women delivered during the first 6 months of 2001 participated in the study. All the women were randomly chosen and given a questionnaire immediately after delivery. All data were compared with the results of the same study designed in 1989 and analyzed. A significant increase in pregnant patients without any drug was found in 2001 in comparison to 1989. The use of iron+vitamins did not change. The use of other, possibly harmful drugs decreased significantly. In the group of 401 drug users, in comparison to 1989, the number of users of only one medicament increased from 12.9% to 41.6%, while the number of users of 4 drugs decreased from 22.7% to 7.5%, and of those of 5-7 drugs from 14.8% to 5.2%. The drugs most frequently used among patients were benzodiazepines. Congenital anomalies were registered in 9 newborns ; 4 were newborns whose mothers did not use drugs (0.85%), 5 were from mothers who used drugs (1.25%), 3 of them with drug use before 12th gestational week. The differences were not significant. Over the period of 10 years in the city of Zagreb a decrease in drug use during pregnancy was observed. However, the use of benzodiazepins (18.2%) and tocolytics (10.2%) seems to be too high. Though, there was no significant difference in the frequency of congenital anomalies between drug users and non-drug users, the question about the benefits of the therapy has to be raised. Following studies are to be made to answer this question.
