ESR Spectra of Nonlinear Excitations in MX Chain Solids
The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra associated with spin carrying nonlinear excitations such as neutral solitons, triplet excitons as well as electron and hole polarons are calculated for halogen-bridged mixed-valence transition metal (MX) linear chain materials within a discrete, 3/4-filled, two-band, tight-binding, extended Peierls-Hubbard model. Results for a strongly distorted charge-density-wave (CDW) material, PtCl, are contrasted with that of a weak CDW material, PtBr: The excitations are quite localized in PtCl whereas they are relatively extended in PtBr. The superhyperfine structure in the ESR spectra is attributed to a small spin density present on the halogen sublattice. These theoretical predictions are compared with the recent experimental ESR data on photoinduced defects in MX materials.
