Amazing biodiversity of Miocene "reefs"
Reefs and bioconstructions were commonly present along the Paratethys shelves during the Middle Miocene. Badenian stage is characterized by widespread coralligene assemblages, associated with bryozoans and other benthic biota. During the Late Badenian and the Sarmatian, serpulids and vermetids become more common. The last marine, late Sarmatian bioconstructions in the Paratethys, are composed of nubeculariids and microbial crusts.
