Multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii – what’s new?
Among the „ESKAPE“ group of serious pathogens, Acinetobacter baumannii is under a great concern worldwide. This microorganism has become a leading nosocomial pathogen of the 21th century and investigation of origin and epidemiology is carried out within the scientific project named „Natural habitat of clinically important Acinetobacter baumannii“. University Hospital of Split has a growing problem in the number of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant isolates of A. baumannii since 2009, and this pathogen is now almost endemically present in most of the intensive care units inside the hospital setting. The presence of A. baumannii in hospital wastewater, as a route for possible transmission outside of the hospital setting, as well as the survival in environmental conditions including seawater was investigated. Although colistin resistance in clinical isolates did not reach visible resistance rate, sporadic isolates with high level of colistin resistance have been detected. The mechanism of colistin resistance was investigated on clinical isolate from patient with fatal outcome. Moreover, a new sequence type with an unusual carbapenem resistance phenotype was registered in University Hospital of Split.
