Weight class and physical activity habits in students from rural area
Introduction: The physical activity plays an important role in the growth of young people also for the matter related to alimentary habits. This bond often takes place in the opposite direction: the alimentary habits induce or limit the frequency in sport-practice. Thus, a wide survey in a rural enviroment was conducted to interview young students and identify if there is a correlation between the body size and the frequency to the sport practice. Materials and methods: In rural area 1250 students (M:F=712:538) were weighed and measured. Body Mass Index was also calculated. All students belonged to the second and third grade of high school (age 15-16-17 years). They were also interviewed with a questionnaire about their sports habits. Results: In the rural area 420 students (33.6%) do not habitually practice physical activity and suprisingly, 68% of these subjects are normal weight. The 66.4% of the sample declared to usually practice physical activity with high prevalčence of normal-weight subjects (605 students) while 64% (approximately) of the obese subjects declared to be physically active. Even over-weight subjects (66%) declare themselves to be active while the underweight subjects seem to be the least active students (55% sedentary). Conclusin: As overweight and obesity youth are more likely to become overweight and obese adults there is also an established link between obesity and alimentary diseases. Vigorous activities have stronger relationships with body fatness than moderate activities. For this reason it is important to deeper understand the factors that lead to gain weight during the growth process in people who are underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese.
