3D Dirac semimetals - Probing the Fermi surface with quantum oscillations

3D Dirac semimetals can be seen as 3D analogues of graphene. They possess linear band dispersion in all three dimensions (in k-space) around symmetry protected touching points of valence and conduction band (Dirac point) [1]. Because of nontrivial topology of energy bands and existence of Dirac points those materials possess fundamentally very interesting transport properties [2, 3]. In high purity monocrystalline samples and strong magnetic fields (up to 16 T) it is possible to observe the quantum oscillations in magnetization (de Haas van Alphen, dHvA, oscillations) and magnetoresitance (Subnikov de Haas, SdH, oscillations) [4]. Frequency of oscillations is directly related to the shape of the Fermi surface, and from temperature dependence of amplitude of oscillations, effective mass of carriers can be obtained. This offers a possibility of distinguishing contributions of carriers from different parts of Fermi surface. In our group we have successfully synthesized monocrystalline samples of various 3D Dirac semimetals: Cd3As2, TaP, ZrSiS, Pb0.83Sn0.17Se and measured SdH and dHvA oscillations in them.
