The Role of the Ottoman Empire during the Thirty Years' War

In order to evaluate importance of the Ottoman Empire during the Thirty Years' War, I argue that the Porte, despite proclaimed neutrality and non-belligerency, played an important and non-ignorable role in the international political arena. There are three aspects that will prove this point. First is the military engagement of the Ottoman Empire throughout the war, starting with the Polish-Ottoman War in 1620/21 and accompanied by the Ottoman military support for anti-Habsburg campaigns of the Transylvanian princes Gábor Bethlen (1613 - 1629) and György Rákóczi (1630 - 1648). Second, an intensive diplomatic activity of the Protestant and Christian parties was staged at the Porte. And a third factor was a constant fear of Ottoman invasion of Hungary.
