The Self-Regulation Development In Athletes Through Psychological Skills Training

Previous studies suggest that the ultimate goal of psychological skills training (PST) is self- regulation development in athletes. Empirical researches indicate that performing skills on the level of overlearning influences the increasement of self-regulation level during performance, shortens reacting time, increases the usage level of the integral genetic potential in an athlete and enhances performance and sport achievement. The process of self-regulation consists of five stages (according to Weinberg & Gould, 2011): problem identification, commitment, execution, environment management and generalization. Research findings suggest that continuous application of PST during middle childhood, adolescence and early adulthood gradually develops cognitive and emotional self- regulation based on self-monitoring and self- evaluation of effort and progress. It seems that PST encourages the development of psychological mechanisms referring to processes in the background of self-regulation suggesting efficient strategies and stressing the value of self-intervention and selective self- correction. Self-regulation has been identified by all the factors influencing an athlete’s behaviour, thoughts and emotions. Children, adolescents and senior athletes who have adopted psychological skills on the level of overlearning develop efficient training and competition stress coping, self-confidence as well as consistency in performance efficiency. We have studied directions for future research focusing on increasing of knowledge and comprehension level of PST influence on self- regulation development.
