Vibration and Fatigue Study of an Inerter-Based Isolation System
This paper presents an analysis of vibration-induced fatigue in a generalized, one degree-of-freedom vibration isolation system. The system consists of a receiving body and a dynamically active base, coupled through a passive isolator. The isolator consists of a spring and an inerter. Modal damping is considered. A broad frequency band harmonic base excitation is assumed. Several parametric vibration systems are analysed where the receiving body vibration minimization and a coupling helical spring fatigue life are used as an isolation quality criterion. Analytical and finite element methods are employed and compared for proposed benchmark verification. Vibration and fatigue improvements can be observed due to the inclusion of an inerter in the isolator. Novel helical spring stress and deflection correction factors are derived and compared with the finite element method results.
