Effectiveness Comparison of Different Light Sources for Photocatalytical Degradation of Pharmaceutical Hydroxychloroquine
In this work hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), underinvestigated antimalaric, was subjected to photolytic and photocatalytic degradation using different light sources. The catalyst was TiO2 in a form of a nano film deposited on a glass ring and in a form of a suspension. The effectiveness of degradation was monitored for different light sources: LED (365 nm) lamp, LED (405 nm) lamp, solar-like lamp and halogen (visible) lamp. During the photolytic experiments HCQ showed no degradation except when irradiated with solar-like lamp. Also, the most effective photocatalytic degradation with film proved to be again the degradation with solar-like lamp. Photocatalysis with LED (365 nm) lamp degraded HCQ after 120 min and also proved to be satisfactory. Additionally, photocatalysis using LED (365 nm) lamp and TiO2 in form of a suspension was investigated. In the experiments with TiO2 in a form of a suspension the concentrations of catalyst were varied: 100 mg/L, 500 mg/L, 1 g/L and 2 g/L. Optimal concentration of catalyst was 2 g/L because it showed the fastest degradation of HCQ. The use of TiO2 in a form of a suspension yields better results in degradation kinetics compared to TiO2 film. Preliminary results on degradation products that were formed during photocatalysis were obtained on high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector and fluorescence detector (HPLC–DAD and FLD).
