Diamondoid nanoparticles in molecular electronics
Nanoscience is an interdisciplinary field dealing with discovery and study of new nanomaterials and carbon-based nanoparticles have up to now found application in areas as diverse as molecular electronics, optics, catalysis, energy production, fuel cells, biomaterials, etc. The goal of this study is to produce nanoparticles of diamondoids, thermodynamically stable cage hydrocarbons, and determine their physical properties. The research will focus on the synthesis of novel, selectively functionalized diamondoid derivatives and their deposition on metal or semiconductor surfaces. The variation of shape, size and other well-defined properties of the prepared diamondoids will enable further understanding of principles behind particle behaviour, which is crucial for their potential application. The expected results should broaden the field of nanodiamonds further and become one step more towards the final goal, the discovery of applicable organic electronics.
