Prefered clusters of basic residues in cytoplasmic domains of integral membrane proteins

Cationic clusters of the type BXXBB (B is arginine or lysine, while X is any other amino acid) are much more common near cytoplasmic membrane surface than expected from high Arg/Lys frequency in cytoplasmic loops of integral membrane proteins. Our working hypothesis is that the selection pressure is consideraly stronger for cytoplasmic than for extracytoplasmic domains of integral membrane proteins due to higher frequency of protein-protein interactions near cytoplasmic membrane surface.
