New methods for biomaterial preparation: Mechanochemical synthesis of calcium oxalate monohydrate

Frequent occurrence of kidney stones caused by the deterioration of the standard of living and eating habits, especially in developing and industrialized countries has led scientists to study the mechanisms of kidney stones. Calcium oxalate crystallizes in three hydrated forms: thermodynamically stable calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) [1, 2], metastable dihydrate (COD) [3, 4] and metastable trihydrate (COT) [5, 6]. COM is most commonly found in kidney stones. Studies on calcium oxalate put the emphasis on studying COM due to its pathogenicity [7]. This study shows the environmentally friendly mechanochemical synthesis of calcium oxalate in a planetary ball mill, and without the presence of a solvent. Unlike previous investigations that were mainly focused on the solution synthesis, this kind of preparation will bring new knowledge about the synthesis of calcium oxalate crystals caused by the influence of mechanical energy [8]. The goal is the synthesis, identification and characterization of calcium oxalate monohydrate in samples synthesized from calcium salts (chloride, sulfate and nitrate) using a mill speed of 750 rpm and monitoring the reaction in dependence of the synthesis time (15 min - 2 hours).Structural and thermal properties of the samples were examined by FT-IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and morphological characteristics by optical microscopy.
