Predicting well-being from past events: Positive events are better predictor than negative events
The aim of the study is to examine how the frequency of various positive and negative life events affect subsequent subjective (life satisfaction, positive and negative affect) and psychological well-being (flourishing) using panel data. The panel data were from first two waves of the longitudinal research project on well-being and life events in Croatia (CRO-WELL project). Sample consisted of N=734 (age M=37, range 18-77 at baseline) adult Internet users who completed on-line survey at Time 1 (T1) in 2016 and Time 2 (T2) in 2017. The survey consisted of well-being measures: Life satisfaction, Scale of Positive and Negative Experience, Flourishing, and a checklist of 69 Life events happened during previous year. Participants also rated positivity and negativity of each event, which was used to define their positive and negative events. Demographic variables: age, gender, education, marital status and income, were controlled in the analyses. Results showed that frequency of positive events reported at T1 make unique significant contribution in explaining the variance in subjective but not in psychological well-being at T2 while controlling for well- being at T1. Frequent past positive events were associated with better life satisfaction, more positive and less negative affective experiences a year later. Frequency of past negative events was not significant predictor of well-being at T2. The findings highlight the positive long lasting impact of past positive events on different components of well-being. The results are discussed within broaden-and- build theoretical framework and set-point theory of subjective well-being.
