Public Perceptions of Migrants and Ethnic Minorities in Croatia: Reflections of Populist Performances?

The paper explores possible connection between existing populist performances presented through the mainstream media and the perception and attitudes towards migrants and ethnic minorities expressed by different groups of Croatian citizens. It is argued that the rise of more radical and politically-based attitudes emerges under the influence of wider socio- historical context as well as situational characteristics of cross-sectional framework of conducted studies. The notion of populism can be included in both of these contextual frameworks. The paper is based on the analyses and results of several research studies conducted during last 10 years in Croatia. The results of these studies revealed constant effect of political orientation on attitudes and ethnic distance towards ethnic minorities, migrant workers, asylum seekers and refugees expressed by adult Croatian citizens as well as some specific subgroups (i.e. students, residents of eastern Croatia, residents of Zagreb) indicating that the politically right- oriented respondents expressed more negative attitudes towards these groups of “ethnic others”. The concepts of ethnicisation, ethnification, securitisation and authoritarianism are being addressed in the interpretations.
