Landfill leachate treatment using hybrid zeolite based processes

The solid waste dumping on landfill sites causes a production of landfill leachate due to solid waste decomposition in the presence of moisture. Landfill leachate sarevery complex wastewaters which contain high concentrations of organic and inorganic matters (Kumar et. al., 2005 ; Foo et. al., 2009). In order to meet the standards for their discharge into the receiving systems it is necessary to treat them in the proper manner. The choice of treatment depends on the leachate chemical composition such as pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), etc. which is related to the leachate age. Young leachates up to 5 years are characterised by a high content of biodegradable matter, and biological treatments are suggested. Mature leachates over 5 years are characterised by a low amount of biodegradable matter and a high amount of non- biodegradable matter. This makes biological treatments very limited and chemical treatments are needed (Raghab et. al., 2013 ; Yuan et. al, 2016). Various pre-treatments can be used for this purpose such as advanced oxidation and membrane processes which are quite expensive. Zeolites are well known natural minerals with a high potential for the removal of different pollutants from wastewaters, especially ammonia (Wang and Peng, 2010). However, due to the complexity of landfill leachate composition, in order to increase the effluent quality it is necessary to apply the combination of zeolite and other pre-treatment methods, which are usually called hybrid-based zeolite treatment processes. In this paper, four different series of hybrid treatment processes, based on different pre-treatment and zeolite treatments, are used for purification of landfill leachate from the Regional Waste Management Centre Bikarac.
