Sequencing the Adriatic Highway in Croatia from 1965 to 1990: Textual Mapping of a Linear Territory

The completion of the Adriatic Highway in 1965 marked the infrastructural inception of a unified coastal territory after centuries of fragmentation into patchworks of ever-shifting political domains. This endeavour facilitated the opening of Yugoslavia to the influx of foreign currency through a nascent mass tourism industry. Either through an extensive allocation of tourist typologies and industrial complexes or by the sprawling semi-legal secondary housing construction, the Highway has enabled an unprecedented explosion of growth. Both uncompromisingly pragmatic in its tracing and deliberately cinematic in views it provided, the materiality of the 600 kilometers long route, constructed from or clad with stone obtained along its course merits scholarly interest by itself. However, the subsequent impact of this corridor on the transformation of the hitherto underdeveloped coast into a continuous peri- urban territory stretched between the scattered historical settlements merits a different approach. This paper will attempt to create a linear inventory of key transformations along the route accompanied by the spatial distribution of fragmented accounts of numerous authors writing about them, creating an abstracted textual map as an entry point into the study of this humble two-lane road that enabled the dramatic consolidation of a vast new territory along its path.
