GIS-based calculation of Solar Energy Potential in Croatia
The main goal of this research was the GIS- based calculation of the global horizontal irradiation (GHI) in Croatia. Firstly, clear sky GHI (GHICS, without the atmospheric attenuation) was calculated by opensource, GRASS GIS software. As input data for calculating GHICS, digital elevation model (DEM) and Linke turbidity data were required. In this research for calculating GHICS ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer), GDEM (Global Digital Elevation Model) with a 30-m spatial resolution was used. Further, GHICS needed to be corrected for atmospheric attenuation to provided real (ground) GHI. This correction was provided based on the clear sky coefficient (kCS) and calculated from daily metrological, MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) satellite data. Final, real (ground) GHI was compared with the values of electricity consumption and imports in Croatia to show if the trend correlates. Based on the results of this research it can be concluded that solar energy exploitation can significantly reduce the need for electricity imports in Croatia and ensure sustainable development. Purposed GIS-based method for solar energy potential calculation, as well as, real (ground) GHI data can be useful for a scientific field such as urban planning, energy management, sustainable development and other.
